The volunteer fire department (back in my Northern Indiana township) needed to move the tanker out of the building for a meeting space. One of the firemen jumped into the cab of the fifties vintage White (gasser) tractor, and started it up. He noticed that the gas pedal was "broken" and not speeding up the engine at all. Well he put it in gear, and drove it out at idle.

About 15 min. later another fireman drove up and was stunned to see the tanker out of the building because he had the carburetor in his hand.

There was a red rag stuck in the intake hole of the manifold, and a pencil stuck in the fuel line. The pencil leaked a stream of fuel exactly the right size for idle operation, and it was pointing at the center of the rag. What a deal.
