The slop you feel is probably because you have adjusted them in place, which is not intended. As long as you have any free play at the clutch pedal you are finished with clutch adjustment. It is never a good idea to adjust the fingers while the clutch is mounted because you cannot tell if you have the pressure plate flat with the flywheel, nor can you tell if the fingers are all the same height because the pressure plate is loaded. I'm not much of a mechanic and although I do a lot of things, adjusting pressure plates is not one of them. I'll bet you have a piece of clutch facing which has come loose and is binding against the flywheel. This is a common method of clutch failure and requires replacement. It is why lots of old tractors won't release in neutral but will seem to work ok otherwise. My advice is to pull the clutch out and inspect it. I would take the pressure plate to a clutch shop and get them to reset teh fingers and check it out.
