karl: They have and it's called an air starter. They are used quite extensively in the north on diesel trucks and construction equipment. The down side is equipment must be equiped with an air compressor, and no leaks. During down times most of that equipment is lined up at an central air station. It has it's down side as well, moisture in the air lines in cold weather. Also when you run out of air, not a lot different than running out of battery.
