Occasional use of ether for an emergency start shouldn't hurt your H. But ether can detonate pretty hard inside the motor - regular use is tough on head gaskets, rod bearings and the like. If your tractor is properly maintained it will start without difficulty at least down to -20 degF without ether. The better cold starting strategy is to make sure your carb, ignition and lube systems are in good working condition.
