This doesn't answer your question about the packing nut, but just for what it's worth, I broke the adjusting flange part of the pulley on my 650D(same setup as you have)....don't remember if I was loosening it or tightening it....but anyway, I did a little grinding to make a bevel on both peices where it cracked in half, carefully clamped both peices back together in a vice, and fired up the wire welder and welded them back together. Guess my welder didn't know it isn't supposed to be able to weld cast. After a little file work where the belt runs, I put it back on the tractor and it's been working good as new ever since.
