The TA is a system for allowing 10 speeds forward and 2 in reverse. It is a planetary (Think automatic trans type gear sets) gear assembly that is placed in front of the 5 speed straight toothed conventional trans. It is operated by a clutch (on this model)that is mounted to the engine and behind the main clutch (complex, but not rocket science) The TA works in direct drive with the lever forward. It works in reduction (about 35%) when the lever is back. The lever is always moved briskly between positions, never slowly. The tractor has both clutches engaged when in direct this causes the TA to act just like a drive shaft, and it does nothing internally. When it is in reduction, the TA clutch is disengaged allowing the planetaries to rotate. The torque reaction of the reduction is directed to a one way clutch which prevents the TA body from turning backwards, and the tractor from doing nothing. The tractor is free wheeling when in TA. This means there is no engine braking and the tractor can roll down hills faster and faster. This can result in a exploded TA if allowed to happen. The operator will hear a whine that starts like a jet engine starting. When it happens, apply brakes, and slow down it is a great way to ruin the TA and expensive. The most common grief is a bad adjustment of the clutches (both) which is easy to fix if done immediatly, Follow the book, Or the Tractor Vets instructions (he is very gifted). The result of not adjusting is to have difficult shifting, and problems moving the tractor (and expensive trpairs if ignored). The second situation is a blown slipping one way clutch. It happens on some, and not on others, (we have a 350U with the original TA and clutches in it and more than 20,000 hrs of rugged use. The third most common issue is a bad TA clutch. this is just a replacement situation from normal wear. The TA is the (argueably) best invention to farm tractors after live hydraulics. It is very powerful in utility value and they do not break commonly if kept in adjustment, and shifted firmly. I hope this is clear to you. JimN
