The check valve only retains vacum if your engine stalls and prevents gas vapors from entering the booster when the engines shut down. You must have assembled it incorrectally or damaged a seal or diaphram. The booster works by sensing brake fluid pressure from the master cylinder and appllying vacum to the diaphram thus appllying more pressure to the brakes both front and rear. So you will have to pull it apart and see if you can find the problem or spring for a rebuilt one.
