Gary, If its necessary to unhook the battery cuz OTHERWISE IT DISCHARGES WHEN SETTING, the problems (IF its still a generator) EITHER theres a short in the wiring or switch etc., OR ELSE the Cutout Relay (in a VR or a simple 2 wire CR) is bad n the points are sticking closed. If tapping on it makes the condition stop the cutout relay contacts are sticking. If the cutout relay points are sticking closed, when the tractors shut off an ammeter would swing over to heavy - discharge,,,,,,the genny would get warm,,,,,,and the battery run down very fast. Also, if the cutout relay points were sticking closed if you removed the belt the genny would spin like a motor. Unhooking the wire that runs down from the ammeter to the BAT terminal on the VR would prevent the battery from discharging and if its reconnected there would be a spark indicating a current draw. A new VR or cutout relay (maybe $50 or $60 or more) would cure the problem. Next, if its NOT a cutout relay problem and the battery slowlyyyyyyy runs down if its not disconnected, theres a short in the wiring or a switch etc. If you remove the hot ungrounded battery cable and attach the lead n alligator clamp end of a test lamp to the bare battery post and the other probe end to the unconnected battery cable, the light will glow if theres a short circuit path to frame ground. If so take the probe end and next search around at wiring and terminal locations n the BAT input side of switches etc cuz if you probe to where the short is the lamp will glow. Note, the lamp should glow if your on the switches output switched side to loads like lights etc cuz thats a normal path to frame ground and the batterys other grounded post. This all assumes the battery itself is not bad and discharges regardless if its disconnected or not. If its an alternator it may not be wired correct or bad itself or theres a short in the wiring or switches. Hope this helps, best wishes n God Bless John T
