I found my problem. I jumped the negative battery terminal to the negative side of the coil, and it started right up. Didn't run real well because I didn't have the timing quite right but it ran. From there it was a process of elimination to find the cause along the battery circuit. Well, to make a long story short, the F terminal in the voltage regulator had completely burned up and so I had a disruption in the circuit. I put a new voltage regulator on and it runs like a new one.
If I was a worrier, I be thinking about what caused it to burn up in the first place, but maybe it won't happen again.
