Im not an expert on this but I do know one thing. ALWAYS disconnect the ground battery cable before hooking up any gen or vr. There usually is instructions with new vr. If you got it from a dealer or electric shop it should be set for correct polarity for your tractor. If you gnd the field and it charges that to me says the vr is bad. I would have it checked at the place you bought it and get another. Theres a lot more to this. Do a search in the archives using keywords like polarizing vr, etc. Its a simple thing to do but everytime I try to polarize a vr I screw it up and evertime I just put it on out of the box it worked great. Go figure. G"luck
