Hal, thanks a lot for all of your help! I still ow you pictures of my final-drive bracket, for the mower. I managed to get the spindle apart last night. The lower bearing fell apart as I reove it. After cleaning everything the rest looks good. I endedd up buying a new spindle, upper and lower seals and a lower bearing and race. Total cost was less that $50. The upper bearing looks great. Not too bad considering I'm still under half the cost of a full spindle assembly.
