I would take and find a small incline and have the nose faceing down, then remove the bolts around the pto and pull it straight back. By doing this you will have the oil go to the front. These pto units are made very simple and a common problem it the cast piece that engages it will break the ears off and need to be rewelded. if you do not see any visible damage to the pto unit look inside the case and look at the shaft that drives it. I would try to fix the unit you have, if you want to go newer style you would need to replace the bottem shaft in the transmition. To work on the pto unit you do not need to pull the top cover
