Jim, There was a big discussion about this a week or so ago. I think everyone decided that its a good idea to have a spare 6V battery on hand. If I were in a bind and had to do this, I would hook the 12V to the 6V (+ to + and - to -)and let the 12V system charge up the 6V battery for a couple or 3 minutes at a time, disconnect the cables and see if that charges the 6V battery enough to crank on its own. 12V systems are negative ground so use the frame of the car/truck for the negative connection, making this connection last and disconnection here first so as not to have any sparks near the battery. Hydrogen gas is EXTREMELY explosive. I've blown up a 6V battery doing just what you are talking about here. Would'nt have happened if I had used a frame ground. Best to just get a spare 6V battery and keep it charged.
