If the gas tank flange has a smooth edge all the way around (no visible damage) you're in business. I recently took an old cap and cut an addition rubber gasket out of an old tractor intertube to match the one in it. I placed the new one right over the old one, it worked perfect. I guess your success may be dependant on the configuration of the cap. Mine was on a 1941 Farmall "B". Good luck!
