pos or neg ground makes no difference ......the only reason you'r starter does'nt work on poss ground would have to be that for some reason you'r not getting a good connection somewhere (when hooked poss ground).....HOWEVER (you may need to have your starter rebuilt & / or find a different one anyway) because a 12 volt will spin a marginal starter sufficiently while a 6 volt will not - precisely the reason why a lot get converted to 12 volt in the first place ( converting to 12 volt is an "easy" fix for a weak starter &/or poor batt cables or connections ....or for an engine that is not tuned properly )
you need HEAVY cables for a 6-volt system to carry suficient current (approx. twice as thick as the "standard" 12 volt cables most parts houses handle).....buy new cables & make sure all connections are good ,make sure your batt is good ( not a "$30 wal-mart" with only 500 cranking amps ), then if she won't start the M your starter is weak - & even when everything is "up to snuff" , you may still occasionally have trouble starting the M ( if your engine has been rebuilt with high compression pistons , or in real cold weather )
it is also possable ( happens at least occasionally) that you ( at least think) you have everything in good shape - the tractor will spin good on 6 volt & still not start right up all the time .....if you run into that problem , in addition to re-checkling starter , cables & connections you may need to tune up the elecrical ( points , coil , plugs , wires , cap & rotor)......what's happening if you run into this is that the cranking system is useing all of the avalabe juice & there's not enough left to fire the ingnition side (&/or the ignition side is "marginal")
hope this helps ! ......sorry for the long post , i coulda just summed everything up with " 6 volts started M'e just fine when they were new & still will as long as everything is "like new" !

Today's Featured Article - Tractor Profile: Allis-Chalmers WD45 (Gas Version) - by Staff. Beginning production in 1953, the WD45 had the same general look as the WD tractor which was produced earlier - but was much more powerful. This was due to the new 4-cylinder "Power Crater" gasoline engine with a 4 x 4-1/2 inch bore and stroke. Some people feel this was one of the most significant tractors offered by Allis-Chalmers in those days. Nothing in its weight or power class could match its performance. In 1954 they began offering the WD45 with the new "Snap-Coupler&quo ... [Read Article]
