Don't be too scared to take the carburetor apart. They go back pretty good with a broken gasket, I've done it enough times in the field. A little exercise may help the governer. change the oil and keep running it. Not wanting to come out of gear, however, indicates a clutch plate which is coming apart, the pieces drag on the pressure plate or flywheel and try to keep it engaged.
