Larry I have a 400 with an old f-10 farmhand on it with the hydralic pump mounted on the pto. I can't see any reason to shut off the hydralic pump other than when running down the road in high gear. No sense in letting fluid just sit there and cycle when it's not in use. Only reason i would not have the pto engaged either for starting up is if the tractor turns over a little hard anyways. That might help it turn faster without the added drag. I certainly won't hurt the pump in my opinon. Fluid should be circulated and warmed anyways before using. Simply my honest opinon
