You are correct in how to get at the seal and replace it. the shaft will go back in pretty easy if you decide to pull it all the way out. Just don't mash the clutch and let the clutch plate get out of line. you will have to pull it far enough forward to pull the flange from the tranny to replace the seal. the spline will be out of the clutch when you get the tractor split to seperate the flange so just give yourself enough room to work.
