Not to steal Medfarm's thunder, but "grenaded" originally meant that the engine looked like somebody tossed a grenade in the oil pan. This is usually the result of a connecting rod or crankshaft breaking and punching a hole in the block. I believe it originated in hot rodding/drag racing, where high RPM engine failures tend toward the spectacular. Nowadays, the term pretty well applies to any major engine failure.
