Note... 1N4004 is rated at 1 Amp forward current. My suggested 1N5408 is rated at 3 Amps forward current. Rarely, I have had 1 Amp diodes fail in this application, so I have been using the 1N5408's, with a rated forward current of 3 Amps, and a PIV of 1000 Volts. This is WAY overkill, but will take any voltage and current spikes the charging system can dish out. I have yet to have one of the 1N5408's fail, and they're not expensive, either.
