Most stepped-head pistons I've seen had an arrow and the word "front" to indicate the way to put them in. What did yours have on them before you installed them? Another way would be to look at the head. If I remember correctly, the head has a distinct combustion chamber and the stepped part of the piston has to fit into it. The pistons will hit the head if they are in wrong. If you still can't tell, place the head on the block with no gasket or nuts on the studs. Turn the engine over gently by hand and see if anything hits.
