This is a long shot, but check to make sure that you do not have an intake manifold gasket leak. This can manifest itself as hard to start or needing to use the choke longer than usual. Mine had a real minor leak between the middle two cylinders. I accidently stumbled upon it one day. Once fixed, I had to adjust the carb and she ran like a champ. Good luck. I still miss my little red tractor.
