There are probably as many ways to clean a gas tank as there are stars, so take your pick. To clean one on one of my H's, I plugged the outlet & dumped about a gallon of white vingar into it, along with a handfull of 3/8" granite chips. I'd slosh it around every day or two & left the mixture in there for more than a month. One day, when I had some time, I dumped the mixture out & worked on it with a water hose. First, I rinsed it a bunch of times & finally got all the rocks out. Then I connected the hose to a chunk of pipe that I'd screwed into the outlet on the bottom of the tank, set the tank upright on a couple of 6 X 6 blocks & let the hose run for a while, with the cap off, to flush it thouroughly. After I blew air into it (upside down, through the outlet), I let it dry for a day or so & used "kreem" treatment on it, according to the directions on the bottles. That was about 3 years ago & I haven't had a problem.
Be careful what size rocks or nuts (or what ever you use to try to scrape the rust loose with) as those tanks have a baffle in them. There is probably only about 1/2" clearance under the baffle & it was tough to get all my rocks out. Some guys have used different types of acid, but I always thought anything stronger than vinegar was a little too hard on things, including the environment. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
