I would have preferred the 1/2 inch rim but I did not have the capability of bending metal that thick. With the 1/2 inch it would be good for the tabs and bolts that you mention. I am not certain about the thinner metal. It may be that I will have to put spacers and bolts between the ring and rim at mid way between the spikes due the thickness of the metal.

Dont know yet.
