A lot of commerical trailers depend on the connection between the coupler and ball for a ground connection - its a terrible design, but I suppose it saves the manufacturer a few cents. As Jnicholson says, the first suspect is the ground connection, particularly between the trailer & tow vehicle. I always run a ground wire directly from the brakes to the ground pin in the trailer electrical connector, and make sure the pin in the vehilce side is well bonded to the vehicle ground as well. You can connect the brake return wire to the trailer frame if you want to, but the important connection for brakes is the retun to the tow vehicle ground. Keith
