If the oil u are using in the air filter is too thin, it can easily be sucked into the engine, as if the level is too high. Try running it without (ugh), a filter for a minute or two to eliminate that possiblity, Of course do this on a calm day and clean conditions, I would put an old sock or something over it to help keep it clean for the minute or so it is running, That would be a sure way to eliminate the air filter as being the culprit.
