That kind of backfire is often caused by a chunk of hot carbon buildup setting off the gas/air mix in one of the cylinders. The cure for getting rid of carbon is to work the snot out of it :) As for it sounding louder, those backfires can do damage to your muffler. I"d bet that it blew the baffle out of your muffler.
