Older Cub brakes, for example, are single-acting (only pulls one end of band tight around the drum while the other end is anchored to the housing) and will stop well going forward but lousy in reverse.

However, the H, M, newer Cubs, and probably others have double-acting brakes. That is, the brake lever pulls both ends of the band tight around the drum and thus is self-energizing in both directions.

Just pull off a brake cover and have a look-see.
