Dad's 400....take a look.

Hello All,

My dad bought this tractor in ’72. He died in a motorcycle accident in 1979, but I’ve always considered this to be “his” tractor. It was used for general purposes and haying in until the mid 90’s when it was parked because the engine was making some noise. My stepfather didn’t know why and didn’t want to blow the engine. We had other tractors including a 350 and a C. Later after my mom remarried they got a Cub, SuperA, another C and another 400. My step dad removed the original fast hitch and put on a Worksaver 3pt. He also had it converted to 12 volt. After he parked “dad’s” 400 he pulled the 3 pt and put it on his 400. Dad’s tractor sat around the barns for a few years then he towed out to the pasture. Mom told me I could have the tractor if I wanted to try and fix the engine problem. I went and got it ASAP. Towed it up from the field, cleaned the fuel bowl, points, plugs, put a good battery in it, and had her running in no time. The noise turned out to be a sticky valve which cleared up with the addition of a can of Marvel’s Mystery Oil. I was able to pick up a very good set of rear tires and rims for $500 and put a Saginaw 3pt. on her (the original fast hitch had been junked to my dismay). I’ve used the tractor the last several years to cut an 8 acre field and pull a hay ride for a couple weeks around Halloween. This year my brother and I decided it was time to freshen things up as she was looking pretty rough. I thought you guy’s might like to see the pic’s. This forum has been a tremendous help for me the last couple years. I really appreciate the wealth of knowledge you guys have in posting answers to questions from “Red Power” novices like me. THANK YOU.

Stripped, cleaned, and primed. I went through about 10 can of foamy engine cleaner and pressure washed her 4 times. Hardly made a dent in the 51 years of grease and grim. We borrowed a steam cleaner and that did the trick. Still took another 3 or 4 washing with that before she was good and clean….

This is the best she's looked in my lifetime. My brother and I consider this a tribute to our late father. It was a true labor of love to bring the 400 back to her shining glory. Most people have no idea of the since of pride and satisfaction I get every time I climb on and fire her up. They don't understand how an old tractor can be so cherished and considered a family heirloom…..but I know you guys can! Skeeter
