All TAs operate with direct drive (as though the TA did not exist) when the lever is forward. When it is pulled back, the planetary gears in the TA are clutched in, causing the power to flow through the gears. The TA must connect to the tractor housing to absorb torque from the gears. This connectin is through a one way clutch (sprague) that has ramps and rollers allowing the free wheeling action when engaged, but driving when the gear system catches up at reduced output RPM. Larger IH units use a hydraulic control system to assist the operator in engaging heavy clutches. I believe (but might stand correcting) that even the large IH tractors need the lever moved deliberately through from TA to direct, and the same from direct to TA. JimN
