I do not know how the starter got involved with the grief, but it may have been nothing to do with your timing of the dist. They might run rough, or quit, but they won't grenade from a distributor issue, unless they are run under load with the timing off and overheat or detonate the tops out of the pistons. I feel it may have been that failing Hyd pump loading the gears that wrecked the engine. JimN
