casio, Due to IHs poor record keeping system accurate #s on SMTA-LP are not known. Even though IH did allocate 500 tractors to be made into LPs.
Most info on them has been gleaned from old retired IH mechanics, service techs, and the like. There are some schools of thought that say all were built and equal amount that maintain that nowhere all 500were built.
Also of the ones built there are no known consecutive #s. Due to the fact that tractors minus carb, system & tank were shipped to the tank Co. in Lubbock and San Angelo Texas, on truck and rail. Also the same trucks also took carbs, system and tanks back to the Factory to be completed too!
The Tank on a SMTA was a longwise mounted arrangement. with a Mono-valve setup at the rear of the tank, @ the 11:00 position if seateds on the tractor. NOT a series of valves in a longwise row at the top side on the tank.
There were a number of Field Conversion done also most of the time the tank is a dead giveaway to being a field conversion.
Back to the Tank issue I have seen a pic of a SMTA with a older crosswise tank like the ones on the older Stage I and II LPs SMs.
Lasty the Farmal SM family had 4 divisions though the were not marketed that way like the SH were.
So here goes....Start with a Farmall M
Add larger engine and disc brakes = SM stage I
take above and
Add live hydrolics and a Super C style batt/seat assembly = SM stage II
take above and
Add Torque Amplifier and LPTO = SM stage III
there was one more member in this family and it ended up in the number series tractors...
take above and
Add refined hydrolics, better creature comforts, a bigger engine yet again...6 cyl = stage IV, aka..400
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
