Hi Don, how many hours on that 784? If that D246 was maintained reasonably well, like regular oil changes, fuel filter changes should get 15000 or more hours out of the engine. Top rings can get broken if someone over ethers it when cold starting and does engine lockup. My brother has a 454 D179 with over 15000 hrs and 684 with over 6000 hrs and both still running great. My first suggestion would be find a 4 furrow plow or 12ft disk or corn chopper and run it hard for a couple days and see if it uses any oil or excessive blowby before tearing into the engine. JB2
