It is threaded, and it's normal threads.("Righty-tighty,lefty-loosey") Tight, but rarely rusty, I'd guess, as it's sort of self-lubing. The usual way is put the tractor in high gear, set the brakes, chock the tires. Insert something that fits in the slot of the coupling and use a big adustable wrench to turn it. I think I remember that it's 1/2 inch, but I don't remember what I used. I'm pretty sure 1/2" key stock would just bend unless you've got an easy one. I do remember putting a short length of pipe on the wrench and standing on it to break it loose. I'd recommend against hitting it as you're using the gear teeth to hold it, and I've heard of people using a pipe wrench on the coupling but that sounds distructive to me. Good luck, Wm
