If you get the joint good and clean, the gasket will seal. If you don't, the sealer may help.

At most, seal only the hot side so you have a chance to take it apart later and still save the gasket. I like to seal rocker arm cover gaskets to the head for that reason.

Straighten sheet metal covers (use a square to check) and get the metal around the holes dinged back straight, don't overtighten them and they will seal like magic without goop.
