A home made, very effective trap that I've seen in Canadian fishing cabins consists of a bucket half filled with water. Poke a nail hole in the center of each end of a pop/beer can and string a piece of baleing wire through these nail holes. Then stretch the wire tightly between the two bucket bail attaching points so the can rotates freely. Smear some peanut butter on the can and position it at the middle of the wire, then lean a small stick along side the bucket so mice can crawl up the stick to the wire, crawl across the wire to the can and get on the can to eat the peanut buter. The can will rotate due to the mouse's weight and the critter will fall into the water and he's done for. Trap doesn't need resetting before it's ready to catch another. In a good night half dozen or so mice can be caught. The trap also automatically tells you when it is really in need of emptying!
