Get a standard 10SI Delco alternator, instead of the (goofy)one-wire unit.

Likely, it will be cheaper, will start to charge at idle, and is less likely to slowly drain the battery during periods of non-use, and is still really easy to wire up. If you don't want to use an "idiot light" as in BobM's diagrams, do can use a simple, easy to conceal out of the way diode, as shown here:
