C123 Blows Black Water

A friend has a B with a completely rebuilt engine
that runs great except....when it is started cold it spits droplets of black sooty water that appear to be water with carbon disolved in them. The engine does run a little rich, the carb is not original to the engine (Zenith from an Allis C)and smokes black when revved.. There is no loss of coolant. Anybody ever see this before? Could it be condensation mixing with carbon depostits?? It stops once the engine starts to warm up.
