Check your charger type. A typical NiMH (Nickel-metal-hydride) battery charger will also charge Nicad (Nickel-Cadmium) batteries, but the reverse is not true. A Nicad-only charger would overcharge the NiMH batteries.

You should be able to get 2 years usage on your NiHM batteries if you try to use your batteries almost to the point of complete discharge but not to the point of failure before putting them in your charger.
