Your described way will also work if you do not bend the cover. Take care and do not pry on it. pull evenly around and don't get it crosswize in the bore. Look at your front puley shaft and be sure there is no groove in the location of the seal. If there is it needs to have a different seal (with the same bore and shaft sizes used to change the wear point, or a speedy sleeve to make it new. A good bearing house like Motion industries will fix you up if you bring in the old seal. JimN
