Yes, the Elwood axle was optional from the 706 and bigger tractors up until the later 86 series tractors, when they switched to a Coleman front end. No, nothing in the serial number would indicate wheather or not it was factory installed. I have no idea what that asterisk means, but it's on just about every serial number tag from the 56 series on up.
