So that must be why we had a couple of Gravestine (SP) apple trees in the front pasture when I was a boy. My mother rented the land to an adjacent dairy farmer. The trees were large and probably 75-100 years old. They could have been planted around 1860. The land was taken for a school 40 years ago. I wonder if the apples improved the quality or freshness of the milk. The orchard was never grazed. Remants of barbed wire along the stone walls still separate another pasture from the mostly Baldwin trees. The deer seem to like them.
