What engine we talken about and no ya realy do not have to remove the gear to pull the crank . If you are doing a total rebuild and having the block boiled then you are going to pull the cam anyhow so that new cam bearings can be installed . The way i remove the cam gears is with a bearing spliter and a press after the cam is out . Now i do have my three jaw and also a good two jaw puller that will get the job done but they did not come from Harbor freight and they cost me a a good chunk of change.
