It sounds like a throw out bearing problem. I had one go when the yoke that holds the throw out bearing(a mica disc) broke off one side, the shaft that holds the yoke was badly worn. If I have the correct tractor , you should be able to remove a pan underneath and access the shaft and bearing. I got all the parts used for $60 and it has worked fine since. This was on a B250 which is alike to the 444, I believe. get underneath, get the inspection pan off and you will know right away. It is a simple job to remove that pan.
