Tom, the older tractors (M H etc.) had a hydraulic pump mounted after the clutch. When you pushed in the clutch the pump stopped, no hydraulic pressure. The later "live" hydraulic pumps ran off of the distrbutor and ran continuously. Later tractors have live pumps in other spots. Dozers had pumps running off the crank out ahead of the radiator, so were live. The big benefit is when manuevreing and using the clutch you still have hydraulics.
