I normally kinda jump out of the way of the crank and pull out on it as it comes around. But yes, always start at 3 o'clock and end at 12, never try to spin the crank. I always try to put a lot of effort into the crank, trying to get the engine to keep spinning when the hand crank has stopped. If the air/fuel is right and the impulse coupler clicks over a few times, it normally sputters and coughs to life.
