In addition to what's posted below....make sure you can hear that impulse coupling to the mag clicking when you're cranking it. Always have heard it on my F-20 but from what I've read on here in the past, if ya can't hear it clicking then it's lots more likely to kick ya.

What I do on mine is just keep all fingers and thumbs on the same side of the crank, then slowly rotate is till it's about at the 7 or 8 oclock position, then pull up. Ya just need to remember to pull up on the crank and be aware of what's going on and you should be OK.

Remember, these things aren't a man-killer. There were millions(well, alot) of 'em in use getting hand-cranked every day when they were younger. True, there's enough stories of people getting bit by em, but that's par for the course(lots of stories about Model T cranks doing the same thing). Just be careful and you'll most likely be OK.
