I always made a point of listening for the little jingling sound that meant the impulse pawl was getting ready to drop into the notch. I seem to remember that the noise stops once the pawl has dropped. Advice from others here is that retarding the mag lever isn't a bad idea. I agree--it's just another way to keep the engine from firing too soon, but I don't really know whether it retards the engine AFTER TDC. When the engine is working at full advance, of course, it is going to fire some degrees BEFORE TDC. Retarding with the lever isn't going to hurt anything, and it might give you some extra safety. If you should have a manual impulse, like on the E4A (and, I think, the Dixie mag used on some earlier IHC tractors), then you just look to see that the pawl has dropped into its notch before you complete the turn with the crank. Lots of people used to spin the crank, but there is no question that if the impulse doesn't catch on one of those turns, there is a good chance of a strong kickback. My father told of broken arms from cars and tractors when he was young, in the 20s (happened to him). A magneto that is working right shouldn't need spinning. The impulse coupling not only retards the spark for safety, but also provides spin to make the spark hotter.
