If the cylinder is mounted vertically next to the radiator, it is set up for a cultivator. If it is nearly horizontal, along the left side of the tractor, it is set up for a plow. Same basic setup was used for several different cultivators or several different plows. These 2 positions were probably the most common uses of the lift but other positions were used for other equipment.
