ALL IHC gas caps had vents. Even the low profile OEM caps from back in the 30's, 40's & very early 50's. The reason for the free safety triple baffle gas cap program was to supply the new safety caps with the quarter turn feature to allow any pressure build up to be released slowly before removing the cap from the filler neck and therefore no raw fuel could be drawn out of the tank. This is similar to a radiator cap. The actual cap itself is the same as IH used from about 1950 or '51 but had a second catch at a right angle to the spring that holds the cap on. IHC used the triple baffle cap on all the number series tractors with metal tanks. I'm not aware of ANY other tractor manufacturer that used these triple baffle caps, Most I'm familiar with used a cap similar to the single baffle cap IH stopped using around 1950. The reason for the switch to the triple baffle was to prevent raw fuel from streaming out of the vent and staining the paint and causing a fire hazard. The lawsuit that prompted the program was caused by a triple baffle cap that had blocked vents and pressurized the gas tank. Your JD has the gas tank over the engine just like the tractor model that caused the lawsuit, but the tank is not as close to the engine. ANY gas tank with a blocked vent can have this problem. Late Model Cars & trucks don't have vented caps but the tanks themselves are vented through a carbon filter cannister to absorb flammable fuel vapors.
